Trail food, Sockwas and should cyclists wear helmets? – Pick of the Barefoot Posts 24

I had a big selection to choose from again this week. I have chosen the posts that I kept going back to to read again.

blogtop1-300x1381. Post of the week is from Daniel Cipriani. Daniel runs the Functional Foot blog and is one of the biggest retweeters of my posts. This post is on Sockwas website and sums up his thoughts about Sockwa so far. A good review from a reliable source. Check out his other posts on his blog

Screen-shot-2012-08-20-at-4.30.33-AM-e13454617695642. I may not like to admit it but I am a dumb ass (or at least I have one).

This post from the Natural Running Centre is perfect for me. I have trouble with my glutes. A pretty good descrition of my symptoms and a clear instructional video to help sort things out. Thankyou.

whole-food-pbj-wrap-up3.  I enjoyed reading this post fron Ross Laurie’s new blog.

I have recently read Eat and Run by Scott Jurek and my mouth watered when he described the wraps he took with him on his long runs. I have never done that. Ross does and even has a link to some Chia Peanut Butter. I may have to consign my jelly beans to the bin, this sounds much better.

Untitled4. This post from CRAG (Cyclists Rights Action Group) is a great starting point for discussion.

It draws the analogy between wearing shoes for running and walking with wearing cycle helmets. It challenges the conventional wisdom of wearing a cycle helmet and discusses the way a helmet can alter the impact with the ground. I have read it a couple of times and can’t make up my mind. See what you think. I really like the quote: ‘ the ancient Zen mind-trick known as “looking where they’re going” ‘

fit-640x4805. Greg Woods is a member of our Barefoot Beginner facebook group and we have seen enough of his feet to know that he thrashes them about barefoot. This is his summary of ChiRunning by Danny Dreyer on Birthday Shoes. I must declare that I am a fan of ChiRunning. It got me started on this barefoot journey. It was good to hear Greg’s views.

I’m a barefoot runner. (I ran more than 30 races barefoot last year, including the Mt. Washington Road Race and all six mountain races in the USATF-New England Mountain/Ultra/Trail series”–becoming the first-ever “Barefoot Mountain Goat.”)

I run barefoot because I have found it to be a very low-impact style of running, which allows me to run without injury. (But if you run now in shoes without injury–don’t change a thing! Stick with what works for you.)

I mention this only because I am deeply embarrassed by the arrant nonsense put forth by a blogger who MIGHT be a barefoot runner. (Although I think not. I think he is just using barefoot running as a useful analogy for his ill-thought-out argument.)

As you can see in the article (link above) this nutball is suggesting that it is better for a cyclist to ride without a helmet–because many runners have found it better to run without shoes.

This is dangerous craziness! Do not ride your bike without a helmet. Helmets save lives. Helmets prevent you (and those you love) from becoming drooling shadows of their former selves.

I don’t care if you run in shoes or not. But for God’s sake wear a helmet when you ride your bike! The people you love will thank you for this.
